YouthWorks provides strong pathways for
continued education and training for disengaged youth not attending main stream
schooling. It achieves outcomes for youth through an applied learning
environment which simply means to achieve learning in literacy and
numeracy in a real and practical way with outcomes that can be seen and
used.
It is an approach which empowers and
motivates young people, while assisting them to develop key skills and
knowledge required for employment, further education and active participation
in their communities.
Outcomes of this innovative program
include:
- Improved student motivation and
commitment
- Learning the generic skills
that are valued in the workplace, e.g. problem solving, working
effectively with others and in teams, leadership and personal
responsibility
- Improved self esteem and
confidence for those involved
- Improved transition for
students with different preferred learning styles
- Re-engagement
into mainstream schooling or further education such as Apprenticeships or Traineeships
Through
the completion of BEST Community Development’s YouthWorks program each young
person will achieve a VCAL Certificate at Foundation level (Victorian
Certificate of Applied Learning), a Certificate I and II in Furniture Making
and a Certificate I in Automotive, along with many other skills including
airbrushing, music, painting and cooking - to name a few.
Our
experienced and qualified staff can assist our clients to explore the most
appropriate further education options to suit their skills, interests and
learning styles.

Corporate and community co-operation in action at Youthworks
BEST Community Development’s “YouthWorks" students worked alongside a
crew of Bunnings employees this week to complete a makeover of the
Youthworks facility in Dana Street.
Using paint donated by Dulux Australia, and scaffolding from Coates
Hire in Ballarat, the team of YouthWorks participants and around 20
Bunnings team members took two days to transform the formerly dingy
workshop into a colourful and cheery workplace. The old kitchen was removed and replaced with a shiny new one and carpet now adorns the concrete floor in the recreation area.
The
difference this makeover will make to the workshop is much more than
the physical – the participants “owned” the project and were actively
engaged in changing their workplace. The mentoring, training and
relationship building that took place will forever be remembered. “It
was like being part of a big team and we got so much done in a really
short time," was the comment from one 16 year old involved; and another
was heard to say how cool it was to “learn stuff from experts."
