GOLDEN POINT WAR MEMORIAL
Pupils of the former Golden Point State School who served in WWI and WWII were honoured at the unveiling of the Corporal William Dunstan War Memorial on Sunday 19 May 2013.
Pictured L to R: Keith Dunstan - son of Corporal William Dunstan VC, Catherine King MP, Garry Snowden - former pupil and teacher of Golden Point State School, Erich Sinkis - BEST Community Development Chairperson, and Sue Cattermole - BEST Community Development CEO.
BEST Community Development purchased the historic school site in English Street, Ballarat, now known as the Golden Point Learning and Cultural Environment (G-Place), in 2006. During restoration of the school building and grounds a WWII memorial was discovered and later restored with assistance from the Department of Veteran Affairs. Further assistance was received from the Federal Government to erect memorials in honour of pupils who served in WWI, including Corporal William Dunstan VC who remains Ballarat's only Victoria Cross recipient.
During the unveiling Catherine King MP noted the importance of remembering all members of the Ballarat community who served in conflict around the world. "This is a very important thing to do ... not to lose that very significant history that is a part of who we are today," Minister King said.
BEST Community Development is honoured to be a part of restoring a site which holds much heritage and veteran significance. "We take great pride in preserving a public monument which will act as a place of reflection for former pupils of the school as well as the families of those who served," CEO Sue Cattermole said.
The Memorial can be visited by members of the public at any time.
